The Canary Laurel of Travesía del Pino

We find the Canary Laurel of Travesía del Pino when we turn off the Calle de El Medio de Arriba in direction Icod el Alto.

The Canary Island Laure (Apollonias barbujana) is a plant that belongs to the laurel family and originates from Macaronesia.

According to the owner of this tree, firewood for cooking was chopped from its base “when there wasn’t any butane yet”.

Branching starts at 130 cm. Its foliage is quite dense. Other specimens existed nearby on the same side of the ravine. One of them was felled for its wood which is highly valued in cabinet making. For a reason it is called the “Canary ebony”.
