Historic Complex

Despite the projects implemented in the 1970s for the renovation of buildings in the municipality, Los Realejos may boast its two urban centres, which have been declared Cultural Heritage Sites under the category of ‘Historic Complex’: Realejo Bajo and Realejo Alto.

Realejo de Abajo was the name of the area before the merging of the two municipalities into a single new municipality, and was declared a Cultural Heritage Site in 2005, considering the high number of elements of great architectural value.

The former municipality of Realejo de Arriba, now the neighbourhood of Realejo Alto, was declared a Cultural Heritage Site in 2014, which confers a special protection to the church of Santiago Apóstol and its surrounding area, given the fact that it was the first Christian church on the island.
