Religious Heritage

Los Realejos is witness to a glorious past, as such it has a historical artistic heritage of significant importance, which is the fruit of its economic wealth, trade-persons setting up in the area, and the activities of religious orders and the church, too.

Nowadays, it still important historic architectural vestige, both in religious architectural and civil architecture. Those which stand out amongst the former include: the churches of Santiago Apóstol (1496), Nuestra Señora de la Concepción (1512), and other smaller churches and hermitages dating from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Los Realejos heritage flourished during the 17th and 18th centuries, due to the population growth and the economic boost. Many hermitages were built in this period, some of which became, in turn, parishes, such as the ones we find in Icod el Alto, Palo Blanco and Cruz Santa neighbourhoods.
