Since 2009, the Feast of the Holy Cross and Fireworks in May that are celebrated in Los Realejos has been able to boast the fact that it was declared a Public Festival of Regional Tourist Interest in the Canary Islands (Fiesta de Interés Tuístico de Canarias), which was awarded by the Government of the Canary Islands. This made it the first festival to be awarded this type of distinction in the Canary Islands.
For this reason, the Department of Tourism (Concejalía de Turismo) in the town hall of Los Realejos organises a series of activities each year that are aimed at visitors who wish to participate in the celebrations and to increase the volume of tourists who come to Los Realejos every May 3rd.
Some of these activities include: shuttling tourists to the centre of the festivities – the streets El Medio and El Sol and the Cruz Santa neighbourhood – by coach or tourist trains; expositions; parades; photography competitions; nocturnal street parties; and the largest firework show in Europe which takes place at dusk. The firework show is also recorded and shown online.
The town is now trying to win the award for Public Festival of National Tourist Interest, and in doing so increase the reach of promotional campaigns.
