Summary of the 2006 event

As a part of an extensive agenda of activities by the City Council of Los Realejos, took place, between April 27 and May 1st 2006, the II INTERNATIONAL PARAPENTE FESTIVAL OF LOS REALEJOS, FLYPA’06

This event, which is included among others of the tourist promotion campaign of the City Council, has the objective to place the region and the island as an international destination for the practice of outdoors sports and activities all year long.

The II INTERNATIONAL PARAPENTE FESTIVAL OF LOS REALEJOS, FLYPA’06, has become an exceptional opportunity to see in action the best world wide parapente pilots, free flight, paramotors, acrobatic, parachuting and jump bases. This event has also helped to promote a cultural interchange for the participants as well as locals. The first ones have been exposed and learned about the local culture (food, folklore, music, etc). For the locals has been also an exciting experience learning about this sport through the conferences, movies, shows, made by the effort of the city council.

Raul Rodríguez has achieved a World record of acrobatic parapente by doing 72 consecutives maneuvers of “infinite tumbling” over the Playa del Socorro de Los Realejos. Also Ramon Morillas, Cesar Maldonado and Paco Renedo have made an important achievement by paramotor in joining the island of Tenerife with the island of la Gomera

This event has also included a sport related and tourism fair. This last one has been promoted by the tourism office of the city council of the island. The local sport related companies and institutions have promoted the latest innovations in this sport and also some shows were included in this fair.

Travel companions didn’t have time to get bored since they had a special tourist program for them. During this event they had the opportunity to visit Parque Rural de Anaga, and also the historic district of La Laguna (declared human patrimony), Parque Rural de Teno (which included the visit to the Villa and Puerto de Garachico), Tubo Volcánico de San Marcos and Parque Nacional del Teide.

The significant increment of the enrollment in this sport since last year (shown by these statistics) has placed Canarias as a world wide reference for this sport

Invited teams for FLYPA’06 were:

• Safety Acrobatics Team (SAT Team): it is lined - up by 8 expert pilots in making aerobatics paragliding. They come from Spain, France and Argentina: Raúl Rodríguez (the present world champion), Bárbara Uranga, Richard Gallon, Horacio Llorens, Alejandro Rodríguez, Hernán Pitocco, Pablo López and Félix Rodríguez (the present world runner – up). Raúl Rodríguez will try to break a world record with the “Infinite Tumbling” manoeuvre.
• DRACO Team: it is lined – up by César Maldonado, Francisco Renedo and Ramón Morillas. This last one is the Paramotor World Champion from 1997 to 2004. He will try to do a voyage from Tenerife to La Gomera by means of a paramotor device.
• The Ozone Renegades: it is an Austrian team lined-up by Paul Sebastian Buchner, Wolf Rettenbacher, Thomas Hauthaler, Daniel Klingersberger and Franz Huber. The only team in the world which is able to make hang- gliding by putting together the sails in a shape of canopy formation.
• The Ozone Team: It is lined – up by Jerome Canaud (France), Antoine Boissellier (France), Timothy and Anthony Green (USA), Matt Gerdes (USA) and Herminio Cordido (Venezuela). It is an international team specialised in technique gliding, acrobatics and BASE jump. A new pilot Mathieu Rouanet is also part of the list, as the current Paramotor World Champion.
• Red Bull Acro Team: Ueli Gegenschatz (Sputnik), Swiss parachute expert in B.A.S.E. jump, Skydiving, Freeflying, Skysurfing and Paragliding.

The accommodations have been possible by the special offer for the festival’s participants and travel companions, of 20€ for double room per person with half pension and 29€ for single room, by the followings hotels:
