
Los Realejos, a municipal district with more than 37.000 inhabitants, is nowadays the result of the urban, social and economic development together with a heritage whose origins go back to the XV century, an age when the Governor Alonso Fernández de Lugo puts an ending to the conquest of Tenerife that took place in this same setting, turning then into the first population site of the island which, with the passing of time, and because of an irregular situation of the territory, crossed over by huge ravines, where a number of small towns with their own special features, regarding Realejo Bajo, Realejo Alto and San Agustín the main parts which will characterise the future of the municipality. With a rural way of living which starts from the same construction of the sugar mill in the manor estate of the Governor, so – called “Country Estate of Los Príncipes”, Los Realejos has experienced each of the economic cycles which made all the lands fruitful, the ones in the middle lands and those in the coastline were wealthy in water springs. In this way, its history and heritage were built.
