Royal Roads

The Royal Roads were ways built by the Spanish kingdom for the burden of persons and goods. These were also known as “horseshoe roads”, because they were paved to make easy the work of beasts of burden. At present some strips are preserved in the coastline, starting in the area of San Pedro viewpoint till the town of San Juan de la Rambla. From Tigaiga it starts another one so – called “the rounds of Tigaiga” which goes up till Icod el Alto and finished in Casa de la Pared.

The ending point of Los Realejos is known because of its large number of festivities of a religious and popular consideration, not in vain it is regarded as the merriest municipality in the Canaries and probably in Spain. The most outstanding celebrations are the Romería of San Isidro Labrador and Santa María de la Cabeza, the last Sunday of May. On the 3rd May, the celebration of the Cross feast, stand out because of one of the most remarkable pyrotechnic shows in Europe. The festivities devoted to the Lady of El Carmen, which meet a large number of believers and visitors who come from different places of the island and abroad of it. Besides those festivities, each neighbourhood has got its own celebrations and the people take care of them to offer the best things every year.
