San Agustín

It is another area of remarkable historical importance, located in between Realejo Alto and Realejo Bajo. It had got excellent civil and religious buildings (Augustine monasteries). At present there are only dwellings of two floors from the XVIII, XIX and XX centuries. In San Agustín road we can observe a good example of the models with eclectic and modernist shapes, such as the house of “doña Balbina”, of a large front and iron balconies; the Theatre – Cinema Realejos, built about 1928, in sites of the missing convent of the Augustine nuns; the house of “Siverio family” of right measures about their gaps. Of an early age, it is the “Delia” house, all of them around the church of Our Lady of El Carmen. In La Alhóndiga road we find out the traditional dwellings of plain fronts (the old San Agustín School). From the beginnings of the XX century, the houses of the XX century, the houses of the Espinosa family, with a modernist façade, where the famous writer Agustín de Espinosa dwelt; the one belonging to Mister Antonio Hernández (Hernández pharmacy), of a historicism pattern.

Outside areas where the political affairs of Los Realejos have taken place, other places greatly considered are the ones of La Cruz Santa, which also contributes to the real estate heritage with remarkable buildings, among them we stand out all those situated in Real road, from the XIX and XX centuries, as well the casino, which dominates the main square, finished in 1950; Tigaiga, San Vicente, Palo Blanco, Icod el Alto, La Zamora, Toscal – Longuera, La Montañeta, offer simpler architectural compendiums but regarded as important in order to know the urban origin and development of Los Realejos.

Although it does not take part of the above – mentioned urban areas, we want to make a reference to a peculiar building because of its structure and results of composition. We refer to the so – called castillo, a dwelling ordered to be raised by Mister Luis Renshaw in 1862 at the very entrance of Los Realejos coming from the northern carriageway. It has got a solid and square form, according to the Medieval castles, a clear sample of the historicism of the XIX century.
